Make sure you are using products that are safe for your EYES, LIPS & FACE
I would be real worried about any products I was using if they weren’t safe for your entire face & body. Most makeup is NOT safe for every part of your face. Steer clear of any products that say they are not eye safe or not lip safe. Extra perk of this is you can use it everywhere on your face & it creates a super cohesive look.

Day 2 - 12/2:
Keep your natural & nontoxic skincare in your fridge!
Doing this has two key benefits. The first, it extends the shelf life of your natural products & keeps the active ingredients fresher longer & your products will perform better for a longer period of time. Second, the cool temperature of your refrigerated skincare calms & soothes inflamed skin, whether it be from acne, rosacea or irritated skin. The cool temps work to de-puff your skin also, perfect for getting extra benefits from your eye creams!
If you don't want to keep the products you use daily in your fridge, if you ever stock up on extra product, immediately pop the in the fridge until you're ready to use them.

Read your ingredient labels!
It may seem so simple, but brands are notorious for telling you they are clean without really being nontoxic. A rule of thumb is that the fewer ingredients a product contains the better. Always look for natural & organic ingredients. If you can’t pronounce the ingredient name immediately go look it up. Utilizing a database to look up ingredients is really helpful. I like using EWG’s Skin Deep website. We also have a database on our website that I have created of ingredients that we will never use in Root products.

Turn your powder eyeshadow into a long-wearing cream eyeshadow!
You can turn any loose product, like blush, bronzer or eyeshadow into a long-wearing cream version of that product by mixing it with a lightweight moisturizer.
Bonus Tips:
*It's important to make sure the loose mineral pigments you are trying to mix do not contain any fillers. If they are pure minerals & carnauba wax, they may not mix well for you.
*Use just a TOUCH of moisturizer & equal or more of the loose pigment

Day 5 - 12/5:
Remove grit or graininess from any natural lip balms or products.
When a natural product starts to get a gritty feel it isn’t a lost cause. The good news is it means that your products are made with high quality natural ingredients. When a product does turn grainy it is because the natural butters used in the product are “blooming”. Blooming happens with temperature changes. You can turn back any product that was gritty into a super smooth consistency again.
To do this you will need super hot water (just below boiling - about 200 degrees) & a freezer.
In the product's original packaging (make sure it’s not leak proof, bpa-free plastic & glass should be good), place the product into hot water for 2 minutes, keeping it upright the best you can. Then, dry off your product & place it into the freezer for a few hours or overnight. Pull it out of the freezer & let the product return to room temperature (about 30 minutes). It won’t hurt the product to be in the freezer ever longer.

Day 6 - 12/6:
Wash your face before bed!
Another super simple tip, but a lot of people tend to skip washing their face at night & wash it in the morning. Really, I suggest washing your face both morning & night. All of the daily toxins we come across in a day such as pollution, dirty & oil need to be removed. The longer they sit on your face (especially overnight) the more likely you will have breakouts, irritated skin & in general, toxins on your skin.

Day 7 - 12/7:
Check how much product is left in your airless bottles!
A lot of beauty products come in airless bottles. These are amazing because they keep your products fresher longer, but it can be tricky to know how much product is inside of the bottle & it makes for a sad day when you pump out the last pump, because our airless bottles get every last drop of product out.
But I’ve got the answer for you. Set your product on top of your phone’s flashlight & it will reveal to you how much product you have left.
Did you know? Airless bottles are awesome for multiple reasons.
As I stated above, they are part of our natural preservative system. But they also get out every last pump of product. Airless bottles are easier to recycle because (they get all your product out which is necessary when recycling packaging) all of our airless bottles are the same type of plastic, which means it can be recycled. When you have plastic containers that contain multiple different types of plastic or even different materials like metal, they cannot be recycled.
Not all airless bottles are a single plastic material. I would ask the company you are buying from what all of the components of the packaging are.

Day 7 - 12/7:
Use up your products before they expire (otherwise get rid of them)!
Today’s tip is another simple, but important one. Natural products often have a shorter shelf life & should be used up before they expire. Your products should tell you how long they are good for. You can find the shelf life & once opened life of your products on all of our product pages.
One nice thing about our loose powder products is that they have a much longer shelf life. While they don’t expire, we recommend using them within 10 years for best performance (especially if it’s one that contains carnauba wax).
All other products do have a shelf life ranging from 1 year to 3 years. Once opened, our natural products’ shelf life ranges from 3 months to 3 years.
If you use products that are expired you run the risk of experiencing different skin issues & reactions (flesh eating bacteria is a real thing). Products that are expired also do not perform as well.
Being mindful to not over-purchase products is a great practice to have. Don't buy more until you've used up the products you already have (or they've expired). You don't need to feel guilty getting rid of expired products, either.
To avoid waste, a lot of beauty product packaging can be recycled. Always clean out your packaging the best you can (tossing extra unused products into the trash are the best way to get rid of expired product) & then connect with a local beauty store to see if they take back beauty packaging.

Day 9 - 12/9:
Be consistent when you start using natural & nontoxic products!
You may* experience a detox/purging period when you switch to natural makeup, skincare & haircare & it is TOTALLY normal.
I tell people it is actually GOOD because your skin is recognizing the new ingredients you are using. But, be faithful with your products (pending severe allergic reactions - but we have never seen any severe allergic reactions with Root products).
It takes your body from one to six weeks to detox out all of the nasty ingredients found in tradition products.
You may experience breakouts, redness, skin sensitivity, excessive oil production or lack of oil production (dryness). This is normal so don't be afraid. This is your body's way of releasing toxins & balancing it's pH levels.
The best thing you can do is be consistent. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep & eat as nutritious as possible.
After the detox phase most people experience improved skin health & appearance due to the gentler more nourishing ingredients.
*Not everyone experiences the detox phase when switching to natural products. It all depends on your body's chemistry & the previous products you were using.

Day 10 - 12/10:
Ditch your toxic razor...
Switching items to less toxic options can feel super daunting at times, and that is why I suggest focusing on options that you use daily first. Ditching your traditional razor for a safety razor is a simple swap to make that is nontoxic but also super eco-friendly too!
Razors with the "glide strips" are full of irritating & harsh chemicals like polyethylene glycols (PEG derivatives), preservatives, fragrances & whatever else those companies are adding to that mystery strip.
Most razors also include multiple blades which is another nasty place for bacteria to hide, which in turn can increase your risk of skin infections. A single blade found on safety razors, lessen the rise of bacteria & skin infections. I have also experience less razor burn, cuts & a much smoother shave using a safety razor.
When you use a safety razor, you're switching to a metal razor & the replacement is just the blade compared to the whole razor or big razor head. Safety razor blades are also typically much cheaper than traditional razor blade replacements.

Day 11 - 12/11:
Avoid ALL products containing fragrance
Fragrances are put into almost EVERY product today, not just your favorite perfumes. You'll find fragrance in home cleaning products, makeup, toothpaste, pet products, to name a few...
Fragrance is toxic on so many different levels. One of the scariest things about fragrances is that they impact people around you & not just yourself.
The affects of fragrances can range from mild reactions to serious long-term effects.
Many fragrance ingredients can cause skin and eye irritation, headaches, and respiratory problems. I personally am severely allergic to fragrances. I will instantly get a headache & feel sick if I smell any artificial fragrances, whether it be from someone wearing any product with fragrance or entering a place that uses fragrance in cleaning products, candles, room fresheners...
Fragrances can disrupt your hormones, have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity & reproductive & development issues. It's no joke & one of the most serious ingredients to avoid.
Fragrances have environmental impacts too... The contribute to air pollution, contaminate water sources, which in turn affects animals living in those water sources.
The fragrance industry is loosely regulated. There is no specific limit as far as what other ingredients can be labeled as fragrance on ingredient decks. Companies are able to hide ingredients they'd rather not declare within the ingredient fragrance or perfume.
Essential oils are a great alternative. While still being diligent to source them from reliable companies who formulate them with aromatherapy certification. At Root, we only use organic essential oils in our products & they are used for the benefit of those essential oils. We also make a non-toxic perfume.

Day 13 - 12/13:
My nontoxic laundry routine!
For 5+ years now this has been how I have done all of my family’s laundry. Not only is it truly nontoxic, it is so affordable & more eco-friendly too. These products gently, yet effectively, deep clean all of our laundry.
Here is what I do:
- Pretty Everything Soap replaces replaces traditional laundry detergent (it is an all-purpose cleaning concentrate that has replaced every other cleaning product in my house, including hand soap)
- Add 2 tsp (1 cap full) of soap right into my washer’s detergent spot. For heavier soiled clothes add up to 4 tsps (2 cap fulls) of Everything Soap.
- Notes: Pretty Everything Soap comes in unscented as well as several varieties that use essential oils. Both make our laundry smell so fresh! My favorite is the Lavender Mint.
- One bottle of Pretty Everything Soap washes just over 100 loads of laundry
- Baking Soda helps deep clean clothes & remove stains. It also works to neutralize odor
- Add ¼-½ a cup of baking soda to the drum of your washer before adding clothes
- Vinegar softens my clothes & also eliminates odor
- Add vinegar to the softener section of your washing machine. Fill it to the max recommendation for your machine’s softener spot.
- Hydrogen peroxide works to brighten my whites - I add peroxide when I am washing whites.
- Add a few squirts of peroxide with the soap in the detergent section
- Dryer Balls + Essential Oils help my clothes dry quicker, smell amazing & eliminate static
- Add a drop or two of essential oils to your dryer balls & toss into your dryer with your wet laundry

Day 14 & 15 - 12/14-15:
Make your own nontoxic surface cleaning & foaming hand soap (I love using this to clean my brushes too)
It's super simple, nontoxic & cost effective to make your own surface cleaner & hand soap.
Items used in this video are:
- Unscented Pretty Everything Soap concentrate
- 16oz spray bottle
- 8oz foaming hand soap bottle
- Small measuring cup
- Water
- Optional: essential oils (or use one of the Pretty Everything Soap concentrates that already has essential oils in it)
Surface Cleaner Recipe:
- You will add 5-15% Everything Soap Concentrate & 85-95% water.
- For a 16oz bottle, I added about 1.5oz of Everything Soap Concentrate & filled the rest with warm water - cold water can harden the coconut oil in the soap concentrate
- Shake!
Notes:
- If you want to add essential oils to your surface cleaner, add them to the soap before you add water. They won't mix with only water & need a carrier to help disperse them
- Use within 2 weeks! To make it last longer / more anti-bacterial, add 25% alcohol (in place of water)
Foaming Hand Soap/Brush Cleaner:
- Add 1tbsp of Everything Soap to an empty foaming bottle (1tbsp for every 8oz of water).
- Add 8oz of warm water - cold water can harden the coconut oil in the soap concentrate
- Shake!
Notes:
- If you want to add essential oils to your handsoap, add them to the soap before you add water. They won't mix with only water & need a carrier to help disperse them.
- Use within 2 weeks! To make it last longer / more anti-bacterial, add 25% alcohol (in place of water)
